The Vanniyar Sangam has given explanations in a few Tamil Nadu regions like Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karur against the release of actor Suriya’s Etharkkum Thunindhavan. The film is supposed to hit the theaters tomorrow, March 10. A letter has been sent for the benefit of the PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) expressing that Suriya’s forthcoming film should not be released in theaters in Tamil Nadu. It has been referenced that his film should not release the film until the actor Suriya apologizes to Vanniyars. Etharkkum Thunindhavan is directed by Pandiraj and produced by Sun Pictures, the film is supposed to be based on the Pollachi incident which created a ruckus in Tamil Nadu a couple of years prior.
Actor Suriya’s issue with the Vanniyar people group began last year after the release of his film Jai Bhim. Suriya produced and featured in the film, in the interest of his 2D Entertainment which was released on OTT stages and ended up being a success among the crowds in the midst of numerous debates.
At that point, the PMK claimed that a few scenes in the film had tarnished the image and targeted the Vanniyar Community. Clearly, actor Suriya rebutted the claims and said that the film’s aim was not to belittle any community
In the meantime, Vanniyar Sangam sent a lawful notification to Suriya, Jyothika, the movie’s director TJ Gnanavel, and Amazon Prime Video over the Jai Bhim film and demanded an apology with Rs 5 crore compensation for allegedly defaming the community.
It all started with a scene in the film, holding a calendar in the background with ‘Agni Kundam’, which is coincidentally also the symbol that represents the Vanniyar Sangam community. The Vanniyar Sangam likewise also sought the removal of ‘defamatory scenes’. However, an explanation was given by the movie’s director TJ Gnanavel on November 21 offering an apology, and before which the alleged scenes were removed from the film.
