“Por Thozhil” is a film co-written and directed by Vignesh Raja that cleverly restructures familiar elements seen in movies like “Ratsasan” and “Anjaam Paathira.” The movie follows the story of Prakash, a newly joined SP trainee who reluctantly takes up a career in the police force due to family pressure. His first assignment is to assist SP Lokanathan, who is known for being unfriendly within the department. The central focus of the movie is Lokanathan’s investigation into a series of murders of young women in Trichy. The film stands out by incorporating humor into the plot in a smart and subtle manner. The humor initially seems like a side track but becomes an integral part of Prakash’s character development. It explores Prakash’s fears, the association of masculinity with a mustache, and his struggles with social interactions, resulting in naturally funny scenes. Additionally, the movie acknowledges the trend of portraying shades of grey in the genre by empathizing with the psychopath. There is a scene where Prakash and Lokanathan debate the origin of the serial killer, highlighting the humanization of the antagonists without justifying their actions.
One notable aspect of “Por Thozhil” is that almost every character has a backstory, each narrated using different methods and tones. Prakash’s reason for joining the police force is humorously depicted, while Kennedy’s backstory is disturbing and detailed. Although Lokanathan’s character lacks an evident backstory, his emotional reaction in the climax hints at his troubled childhood. The movie avoids becoming a typical thriller focused on parenting and instead prioritizes the thriller aspect, maintaining a consistent level of intrigue. The pacing of the film is impressive, never dwelling too long on a particular scene or event. The cinematography effectively uses colors and shadows characteristic of psycho-killer dramas, creating a visually captivating experience. The background score by Jakes Bejoy adds to the film’s atmosphere, distinguishing itself from his usual style in Malayalam cinema. Overall, “Por Thozhil” presents a unique blend of engaging storytelling, character development, humor, and thriller elements, making it an enjoyable and intriguing movie experience.
