Dhoomam Movie Review
“Dhoomam,” a thriller film centered around the tobacco industry’s vices, seems outdated both in terms of its subject matter and storytelling techniques. While it is commendable to deliver a meaningful message while entertaining audiences, society currently faces more pressing issues such as environmental hazards, communalism, and drug abuse. Smoking no longer appears to be the burning issue it once was, as exemplified by John Grisham’s “The Runaway Jury” in 1996. The film features Fahadh Faasil as Avinash, a charismatic marketing executive who consistently delivers successful campaigns for a cigarette company headed by Sid, played by Roshan Mathew. After a jarring opening scene involving Army interrogators questioning a beaten Chinese spy in an underground location, the story swiftly transitions into thriller mode. Avinash and his wife, portrayed by Aparna Balamurali, find themselves in a life-threatening situation while driving home one night. Just as Avinash is about to disclose his decision to quit his job to his wife, they are attacked in their car and wake up the next morning in a desolate hillside. Avinash must gather ransom money and fulfill the demands of their captor within 24 hours to return to their normal lives.
Narrated through flashbacks, we discover that Avinash wanted to quit his job because the company’s leadership, including Sid’s uncle played by Vineeth, prioritizes profits over the impact of cigarettes on people’s health. They aim to expand their market by targeting the youth, which ultimately leads Avinash and Divya into their perilous predicament. Pawan Kumar, a highly acclaimed Kannada writer-director, collaborates with Fahadh Faasil, one of Malayalam cinema’s top talents, raising expectations for “Dhoomam.” However, the film disappoints with its lackluster script, excessive length of around 150 minutes, and an overall dated feel reminiscent of the 90s. The actors struggle to elevate the material and bring it to life.
