Etharkkum Thunindhavan Movie Review

In Etharkkum Thunindhavan, Suriya plays Kannabiran, an advocate who remains by the side of equity and safeguards the blameless people. He is the doting son to his parents Aadhirayar (Sathyaraj) and Kosalai (Saranya Ponvannan). What’s more, according to Aadhini (a fine Priyankaa Arul Mohan), his love interest, is like Murugan. In short, he is more or less an avatar, and without straining too much. Director Pandiraj lays out the legend of his hero. The plot takes this thought forward with Kannabiran attempting to safeguard the nobility of ladies.
The abhorrent man who is doing the ‘disrobing’ here is Inba (Vinay Rai, resuming off from the last known stopping point in Doctor), a central minister’s son. Inba and his team exploit clueless young ladies for the sake of love and shoot clips of them in physically compromising positions, and later utilize the videos to extort the people in question, an unmistakable implication to the Pollachi rape cases. When Kannabiran saves Yazhnila, Aadhini’s friend, Inba chooses to focus on the advocate and threatens to leak hidden clips of 500 women if he doesn’t give up Yazh.
At the plot level, Etharkkum Thunindhavan basically moves along on unsurprising lines. Yet, as he did with his movies like Vamsam and Kadaikutty Singam, Pandiraj roots the characters with very specific backgrounds, which lends some freshness. Like the background in which the film occurs. Kannabiran lives in Thennaadu, a village that appreciates ladies. Inba lives in the adjoining town Vadanaadu, whose men wed the young ladies of Thennaadu. Yet, there has been some rivalry between the two towns ever since the suicide of a Thennaadu woman who had been married off to a Vadanaadu guy.
The director adroitly utilizes this to infuse a few tension and humor into the sentiment among Kannabiran and Aadhini, who is from Vadanaadu. A portion of the humor works, on account of Devadarshini, who plays Aadhini’s mom Anjumani. Yet, the bundle of comics that are essential for the cast is a setback. Indeed, even Soori, who for the most part sparkles in this director’s movies, is not really entertaining. However, the director’s attempt to balance ‘family-friendly’ scenes with the more serious portions leads to an uneven tone that is sometimes very clashing.
In any case, what raises this nonexclusive masala film is its dynamic standpoint. It is certainly great to see a star vehicle that conveys the right message, particularly with regards to ladies’ empowerment. Like Ajith in Nerkonda Paarvai, Suriya, who is charming and earnest, uses his stature really well in these portions. A scene between Kannabiran and Aadhini about the ‘shame’ involved in hidden cam videos is sensibly written (“Verum udambu aabaasamaanadhilla… Avanga vakkara budhiya vida aabaasamaanadhilla”)
The film is likewise mindful of the grayness of vigilantism and extra-legal killings. It shows us Kannabiran using the judicial route to get justice and does take up the law in his own hands when all doors are closed.
