At the end of the 1980s, the government decided to build a mine in the villages around Arumapuri and extract mineral resources. The Tamil Nadu People’s Force led by Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi) is fighting against it. They are shown doing things like blowing up trains and killing police officers. Kumaresan (Suri), a regular police officer, joins Perumal and a camp set up to catch the Tamil Nadu People’s Force. Love blossoms between him and Tamilarasi (Bhavanisree), a village girl living in the hills. Kumaresan, who is shown to be self-respecting, moves on to the problems he faces from the higher-ups and the secrets he discovers about Perumal’s whereabouts in this ‘Viduthalai Part 1’.The image of a comedian is completely gone and Suri stands before our eyes only as the innocent, yet self-respecting police officer Kumaresan. Actor Suri shines as the character everywhere, beyond turning into counters and some of the things he naturally says despite him. Vijay Sethupathi doesn’t have much to do in this first part beyond a few scenes. As the heroine, Bhawanisree has emerged as a normal hill village girl in appearance and acting.
