FEUOK has demanded to increase the gap between theatrical and OTT release

The Kerala-based Film Exhibitors United Organisation (FEUOK) has called for a longer time period between a theatrical distribution and on-demand streaming of movies. The industry organizations had already decided to distribute the movies on OTT platforms 42 days after their theatrical debut. The top organization for Keralan movie theatres has since asked for this time frame to be increased to 56 days.

FEUOK and Kerala Theatre Owners Association recommended that the modifications be made after the Onam season (August–September) in a letter to the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce. The development occurs against a backdrop of rapidly declining Malayalam movie theatre attendance.

According to the exhibitors’ group, non-Malayalam movies like KGF: Chapter 2, Vikram, and RRR were the only blockbusters in Kerala in recent months. Kaduva, Malayankunju, and Mahaveeryar, three popular Malayalam movies, were unable to fill theatres. As a result, FEUOK argued that the window period for OTT release of the movies must be extended.

K Vijayakumar, the president of FEUOK, said, “Audiences were staying away as they understand that the movies will be available on the OTT platforms soon.’’ Additionally, he claimed that a few production companies in the sector are breaking the law. According to the present arrangement, a movie can only be published on digital channels 42 days following its theatrical debut. Vijayakumar said, “We will not cooperate with such companies flouting the agreement.”

“Cinema theatres affiliated to the organization should stay away from releasing the movies of actors who prefer releasing their movies on the OTT platforms,” said Vijayakumar.
