The European Commission is set to unveil the names of major online services falling under the scope of the forthcoming Digital Markets Act (DMA). Scheduled to be enforced from March of the following year, the DMA is poised to implement a strict set of regulations dictating what tech companies can and cannot do, with the goal of fostering a more equitable digital market.

After the Commission’s announcement, companies on the list will have a six-month window to bring their services in line with the new regulations or challenge their categorization as ‘gatekeepers’ through legal means. The European Union (EU) has been actively pursuing more stringent regulations for big tech firms, aiming to safeguard European online users and promote competition in an industry historically dominated by U.S. giants.

Thierry Breton, the EU’s Industry Commissioner, emphasized ongoing discussions with these companies regarding compliance but made it clear that if the proposed solutions fall short, decisive measures will not be ruled out. The EU’s stance on enforcing fairness and competition in the digital realm remains steadfast as it takes strides toward a more regulated tech landscape.
