Oath-taking for Droupadi Murmu as President of India
Droupadi Murmu, the nation’s new president, will become the first member of the tribal people to hold the office when she is sworn in on Monday at the Central Hall of the Parliament in New Delhi. She will receive a 21-gun salute following her oath of office.
According to the Indian Constitution, the ceremony will begin at 10:15 am, and the Chief Justice of India, N. V. Ramana, will administer the oath of office to the President before exchanging seats with the departing President, Ram Nath Kovind. Murmu will put her signature on the oath record that the president’s secretary has put in front of her. The home secretary will make the proclamation after the new President has approved it and signed the oath register. The 15th President of India will make her opening remarks at 10:23. Once the new President has given the home secretary permission to do so, the ceremony will be over.
At 10:03 a.m., the departing President Kovind and the President-elect Murmu will arrive at Parliament House where they will be welcomed by the departing Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha M. Venkaiah Naidu, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, and CJI Ramana. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers, state governors, chief ministers, chiefs of foreign missions, members of parliament, and top civil and military officials of the government.
On Thursday, Yashwant Sinha, an NDA contender of the opposition lost to Murmu. She received 2824 first preference votes, worth 6,76,803 votes, compared to Sinha’s 1,877 first preference votes, worth 3,80,177. After the third round of counting, Murmu had attained the majority threshold (5,28,491).
