Many of us love to go to bed and sleep for longer hours to shake off exhaustion or to just relax. However, latest researches reveal that those who sleep for more than what is required may have increased chances of strokes. A healthy adult should be able to catch at least 8 hours of undisturbed and sound sleep at night. An article published in the Neurology Journal says that sleep patterns that exceeds this may not be good for health. Those who sleep for one and half hours post lunch have 25% more chances of getting strokes than the ones who catch shorter naps of half an hour. The study also reveals that those who do not sleep in the afternoon have absolutely no chances of suffering stroke compared to the people who love taking a siesta. The cholesterol levels of those who take elaborate naps in the afternoon or long hours of sleep in the night may severely uctuate, with increasing fat deposits in their waist as well. Both these factors may lead to stroke and other health issues.

Longer sleeping hours during the day or night are indicators of an inactive and unhealthy lifestyle. Researcher Shiziao Minang of the Huanghuai University of Science and Technology in China, who led the study, says that such unhealthy lifestyles may increase the chances of stroke. The study was conducted on 31750 people of an average age group of 63. Most of these people hadn’t suffered stroke before they became part of this study. As per the reports, 1557 persons among them suffered strokes during the duration of the study that lasted six years. Those who sleep for more than 9 hours during the night have 23% chances of suffering stroke than the people who catch up to 7 – 8 hours of sleep. Besides, people who prefer long sleeps in the afternoon have 85% more chance of getting strokes than the ones who like short naps. This study stresses the fact that though sleep is essential for health and well being, over sleeping can actually hamper your health.
