Rishab Shetty’s “mannina kathe” Kantara’s level of success since its theatrical debut on September 30 has surprised not just industry observers, but also the film’s creators. This was a little movie that they planned to simply release in Kannada and keep in theatres for a few weeks. But then, mostly because of the final 30 minutes, Kantara took on a life of its own, earning it the moniker “divine blockbuster” from the audience.

As a result, the movie, which needed to be dubbed into other languages only for over-the-top distribution (OTT) purposes, had to be ready in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam in just two weeks. Over the course of a month and a half, Kantara was able to earn an astounding Rs 400 crore at the box office worldwide. On the surface, it appeared that everyone who viewed the movie adored it and Rishab’s belief in his ability to convey a compelling story.

The lustre seemed to be finally off, though, when the movie was released on OTT, first on Amazon Prime in the four south Indian language versions and then on Netflix with the Hindi version. On November 24, Kantara became available on Netflix, and since then, there has been a steady stream of social media messages claiming that the movie is not as amazing as it is being portrayed to be. Following a query about the most overrated movie of 2022 from two industry tracking handles, the movie started trending on Twitter today.

“#Kantara is an overrated movie inline with KGF2, Pushpa and RRR. There is nothing great about it in any terms whether it is storyline, cinematography, or the overall acting and script. It is still a hit like many other plotless and common scenario south movies,” wrote one user.

Kantara is written and directed by Rishab Shetty.
