The Mumbai Sessions Court has quashed the criminal case against Bollywood star Richard Gere for kissing Shilpa Shetty at a public event in 2007. According to the verdict, the court dismissed the case saying that no charge against the actress can be sustained. Additional Sessions Judge SC Jadhav observed that a woman cannot be prosecuted if she is touched or otherwise in public during the hearing of the case. The court held that there was no unilateral move on the part of Shilpa Shetty to kiss in this case. The court said that there is no obscenity in this incident. The court added that there was no evidence to suggest that Shilpa defamed the image of a woman.

Hollywood actor Richard Gere kissed Shilpa Shetty on the cheek at an AIDS awareness program to make it clear that AIDS is not transmitted through kissing. Media reports at the time said that Shilpaya was taken by surprise by Gir’s move. Subsequently, after its photos were in the media that day, following a complaint, the IPC registered a case under various sections in Rajasthan in 2007. The case was later transferred to Mumbai in 2017. In January last year, the magistrate court dismissed the case against Shetty. But the prosecution filed a review petition against the order claiming that Shilpa was well aware of the media presence at the function and did not object to the kiss involving her. That is what has been pushed.
