After working together in 2016’s hit horror comedy Devi, Prabhudeva and filmmaker Vijay joined hands for the second time in forthcoming dance drama Lakshmi, slated to hit the screens this week.

At the audio launch of Lakshmi over the weekend, Prabhudeva confirmed signing Devi 2 with director Vijay and he also hinted that it might have music by Sam CS. While the project might not take off immediately, it is quite possible that the director-actor duo might collaborate next year. In fact, the ending of Devi, which also released in Hindi and Telugu and bombed, suggested that a sequel is in the offing. Tamannaah Bhatia played the leading lady in Devi.

At the event, talking about Lakshmi and reuniting with Vijay, the actor-choreographer said that it’s undoubtedly the best work of Vijay. “Vijay has made good films but I think this is his best work. When I agreed to do the project, I told Vijay that if we do a dance-based film then it should really stand out. He had a clear vision about what he was doing and he successfully pulled it off. I believe Lakshmi will set a benchmark for dance-based films which are rare in Tamil cinema.”

The industry grapevine is that Lakshmi is loosely inspired by Jackie Chan’s Karate Kid. The story revolves around the emotional bond between a guru and his mentee. Instead of martial arts, the premise is set against the backdrop of dancing in Lakshmi.

Featuring mostly newcomers, Lakshmi stars child actors from various parts of the country. Also starring Aishwarya Rajesh, Karunakaran and Salman Yusuf Khan, the film has been produced by Prateek Chakravorty and Shruti Nallappa. Prabhudeva said it was gutsy of the producers to back such a subject and not bet on a regular commercial film with songs, dance and fights.
