As the pan-Indian financial success continues to outpace Bollywood, Tollywood has also started to diversify its budget for new projects. Big-budget projects are nothing new to Telugu cinema in recent times. But as many successes as there are failures. A new example of this is Shakunthalam, where Samantha came as the heroine. The Telugu media is currently reporting on the loss figures created by the film, which has been a major flop at the theatres.

According to reports, the budget of the film was 50-60 crores. News 18 reports that the lifetime collection of the film which hit the theaters on April 14 is only 7 crores. According to a report by Great Andhra, producer Dil Raju has made a loss of Rs 22 crore. He is the producer of Vijay films including Dassara, Balagam, and F3. There were earlier reports that the film had earned a huge amount through OTT rights before its release. Dil Raju tried to get a huge amount for the satellite rights as well but was not successful in reaching a deal.

Directed by Gunasekhar, the film belongs to the mythological drama genre. The screenplay was written by the director himself based on the famous play Abhijnana Sakunthalam by Kalidasan, based on the epilogue of the Mahabharata. Apart from Telugu, the film also hit the theaters simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada languages. But the film received bad word-of-mouth publicity from day one.
