The movie “Padachone Ingalu Kaatholee” ends with a voice-over saying that the recent murders in Kerala, which were all motivated by superstitions and black magic, are setting us back in time. The fragmented nature of that commentary made me wonder if the filmmakers included it to give the movie a framework so they could respond to questions from the audience about what the movie was.
Dinesh is a teacher who subscribes to the left’s philosophy. Dinesh’s life wasn’t easy because misfortune made each step challenging for him. In Padachone Ingalu Kaatholee, Dineshan’s life undergoes significant upheaval once his girlfriend who came from a right-wing family suggests using astrology as a remedy.
The movie’s censor certificate indicated a running time of 180 minutes, although the version I watched was closer to 150 minutes. The strange thing is that, after having nearly 30 minutes of its content removed, the movie still felt like an aimless collection of scenes that never connected to the story. It doesn’t really take long to wonder why the narrative included a 5-minute sequence in the movie showing one of Hareesh Kanaran’s characters, KK, unsuccessful attempts at an arranged marriage. The most tiresome aspect of this film is the countless pointless diversion the script introduces in an effort to tell a straightforward, simple satire.
