At the unveiling of the Gutta Kusthi first look poster, actor Dhanush praised director Vishnu Vishal. The Maari actor tweeted the poster along with the caption, “Here is the first look of #GattaKusthi. Always a pleasure to see @TheVishnuVishal in sports films. Wish you another grand success with this film Vishnu (sic).”
The 2009 release of Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu, Vishnu Vishal’s directorial debut, remains one of the top sports movies in Tamil cinema, proving Dhanush’s statement to be correct. He performed once more in the sports drama Jeeva, which was about biases and corruption in the world of cricket. Notably, both movies did well at the box office.

He is now returning with a new sports movie, and his forthcoming movie will focus on gatta kusthi. The game is comparable to mud wrestling, which gained popularity after Aamir Khan’s blockbuster film Dangal and is quite popular in Kerala and the southern regions of Tamil Nadu. Chella Ayyavu, who helmed Vishnu Vishal’s last film Silukkuvarpatti Singam, is the director of Gatta Kusthi as well. Vishnu underwent rigorous training for his part in Gutta Kusthi.
Aishwarya Lakshmi plays the female lead in the movie. Her previous appearance was in the direct-OTT release Ammu. The film has enlisted Justin Prabhakaran, a composer best known for his work on the films Pannaiyarum Padminiyum and Monster. After producing duds like Silukkuvarupatti Singam and Kaadan, Vishnu Vishal, who was going through a tough spell, made a strong comeback with FIR. After Gatta Kusthi, he will be seen in Mohandas.
