According to reports, Shalini is acting at the special request of Mani Ratnam and actor Madhavan.She last acted in Mani Ratnam’s Alaipayuthey and Kamal’s Piriyatha Varam Vendu. Piriyata Varam Vendu was the Tamil version of Malayalam movie Niram.The hit Niram was released in 1999 , directed by Kamal and starring Kunchacko Boban and Shalini in the lead roles. The film, which was based on the theme of friendship and romance, was a super hit at the box office.Shalini left the industry after her marriage to actor Ajith in 2000.
